Object description :

"French School, Late 18th, Early 19th Century, Portrait Of A Lady With White Ribbons"
French School, late 18th, early 19th century, (ca. 1795-1810) Portrait of a lady with white ribbons, oil on canvas, cm 43x33

With gilded wooden frame: cm 47x37x3,5

The painting depicts a half-length portrait of a mature woman, depicted against a neutral dark background that enhances the warm light of her face and the whiteness of her blouse. She wears a simple, dark dress with a black bodice and a low neckline veiled by a white blouse, perfectly in keeping with the fashion of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Her brown hair is gathered and adorned with white ribbons and bows, a neoclassical touch. Her regular, serene face is illuminated by a soft light that gently shapes her features: a broad forehead, pale eyes, a straight nose, and thin lips, with a composed and self-assured expression. She wears refined yet discreet jewelry: gold pendant earrings, a dark ribbon necklace clinging to her neck, and a long gold chain with a medallion or cameo. The ensemble reveals an elegant, bourgeois taste, inspired by French fashion of the Directoire-Empire period. The frontal pose and the absence of decorative elements focus attention on the woman's personality, which appears cultured and dignified. The artist, of good but not academic school, tried to capture his humanity rather than his social rank, offering a portrait of intense sobriety and fine psychological sensitivity.
