Animated Landscape With Ancient Ruins And A Waterfall - Oil On Canvas - Late 17th Or Early 18th Century
Artist: Dans Le Goût De Claude Gellée, Dit Le Lorrain
PAYSAGE ANIMÉ AUX RUINES ANTIQUES ET À LA CASCADE
In the taste of Claude Gellée, known as le Lorrain
French or Italianizing school, late 17th - early 18th century
Original oil on canvas
The composition is organized around an exceptional tree, with a single trunk that splits into two powerful shafts: it occupies the center of the painting and dominates the whole with its imposing mass. To the left, it opens onto a vast plain bathed in pinkish twilight, in the tradition of the heroic landscape established by Le Lorrain and his successors. To the right, dominating a rocky spur at the foot of which a waterfall cascades, stand the ruins of an ancient building: triumphal arch, Corinthian columns and fragments of a collapsed rotunda make up a setting of melancholy grandeur. A second, more massive building looms in the greenery in the background.
In the foreground, two figures in period costume converse at the water's edge, discreetly enlivening the lower register. The construction in successive planes, the alternation of light and shadow and the balance between ruined architecture and wilderness testify to a good mastery of the conventions of the genre.
Condition of preservation. Canvas and stretcher are original. The stretcher is worm-eaten - a condition visible on the reverse - but we have chosen to preserve it as is, without replacing parts or lining, for the sake of authenticity. On the front, the mark of the stretcher's top bar is slightly visible, with the canvas showing a slight slackening at this point. Old craquelure over the entire surface, in keeping with the age of the work.
Frame. Modern molded frame, burr walnut veneered, in the spirit of the 17th century.
Dimensions. Canvas: 63 × 58 cm. With frame: 79 × 73 cm.
