George Barrett Senior was an Irish landscape painter and member of the Royal Academy. Barrett traveled extensively in England (notably in the Lake District and on the Isle of Wight), Wales and Scotland to paint his landscapes, which enjoyed great success with renowned collectors.
He exhibited at the Society of Artists of Great Britain before founding the Royal Academy with other artists in 1768, where he exhibited until 1782. In that year, Edmund Burke became his friend and patron.
George Barrett's paintings were appreciated for their finesse, the quality of their light and the beauty of the sites chosen. Our painting is a good example of his work. The presence of mountains in some of Barrett's compositions suggests that this is probably a Scottish landscape.
