Our painting is a fine example of Jean Mazzella’s Normandy seascapes; an artist active in the 1870s and 1890s and considered one of the Normandy marine painters of the Alabaster Coast. He painted the seashores from Dieppe to Honfleur, including Fécamp, Yport, and Étretat.
The composition of our painting is beautiful, brought to life by numerous boats and figures, featuring a pier, two breakwaters framing the harbor entrance, and seagulls. The color contrasts of the sea are equally remarkable, typical of the hues seen along this Normandy coast—ranging from the brown in the foreground to the blue-green further out and the pinkish tones on the horizon. The many figures in the boats bring this composition to life, offering a glimpse into the lives of Normandy’s seafaring people in the 1880s (our painting is dated 1883).
