This very fine landscape is probably set in the Lyon region or near the Alps. The workmanship of the painting combines a certain classicism in the drawing and composition with a beautiful light in yellow and pink tones that undoubtedly betrays an Italian influence.
If we add to this the moss-like treatment of the trees' foliage, the very mineral aspect of the landscape with its meticulously drawn rocks that catch the light well, and the small but well-drawn figures a little lost in the landscape, we are reminded of painters from the Lyon school of the first half of the 19th century, such as Antoine Ponthus-Cinier or even the painter Pierre Thuillier, who had a taste for desert landscapes in the French regions and as far afield as Italy and North Africa. Two of the latter's paintings from the 1840s come to mind for comparison: "La voie des tombeaux à Taormine", exhibited at the 1843 Salon (Galerie Didier Aaron), and "Vue prise à Elbiar, près Alger" from 1847 (Musée d'Amiens).
