"Alexis Dalige De Fontenay - Storm In Etretat"

Alexis DALIGE de FONTENAY Paris, 1813 - Paris, 1892 Storm at Etretat Watercolor 24 x 32 cm (40 x 48 cm with frame) Signed lower right "Ais de Fontenay" Very good condition On display at the gallery A student of Louis Hersent and Louis-Etienne Watelet, Alexis Daligé de Fontenay was a Romantic landscape painter who favored picturesque sites in the spirit of the lithographers of Baron Taylor's "Picturesque France." He was also president of the Association of Painters and Sculptors founded by Baron Taylor. Daligé de Fontenay traveled extensively but primarily painted Normandy, Brittany, Switzerland, and the Pyrenees. Our painting is a watercolor, which is rare in Daligé de Fontenay's oeuvre. It is in very good condition and remarkably fresh. The colors are beautiful, particularly the blue of the sea. A very successful watercolor with that remarkable rendering of texture so characteristic of Daligé de Fontenay. A work with a very picturesque subject, yet at the same time filled with small descriptive details typical of the fishing community in Normandy in the mid-19th century!
