Like a stroller, the eye travels down a cobbled alleyway in Avignon's old town, to discover a female silhouette in profile, enlivening a resolutely vertical composition. Worn facades with peeling plaster, half-open blue shutters and irregular stone floors lead naturally to the end of the alley, where the bell tower of Notre-Dame des Doms cathedral, topped by its gilded statue of the Virgin, rises above the foliage. The palette, dominated by lavender blues and warm ochres heightened by touches of green, captures the distinctive light of Provence's old quarters.
The artist demonstrates a masterful technique: confidently laid ink outlines, broad transparent washes, paper reserves exploited for areas of intense light. The treatment of shadows cast on cobblestones and eroded walls betrays a long practice of plein air. In style and craftsmanship, this work is part of the French watercolor tradition of the first half of the 20th century, in the tradition of the regionalist watercolorists who painted the old stones of Provence and Languedoc.
