Portrait Of An Actor In Stage Costume - Oil On Canvas - 19th Century - Monogrammed

Portrait of an actor in stage costume
Oil on canvas
XIXth century
Monogrammed "IG" or "JG" lower right
Frame with relief carved foliage decoration
48 × 38 cm, 65 x 55 cm with frame
Very good overall condition

The model is shown in three-quarter view, dressed in a gold brocaded pourpoint with Renaissance motifs, a dark coat with turned-down collar and a flat white lace collar. A red stone ring adorns his right hand, which he brings to the center of the composition in a theatrical gesture. The voluminous curly hair and musketeer-style moustache confirm a stage costume, most likely borrowed from the Romantic repertoire - Hernani, Ruy Blas or some great Spanish role from the theater of Hugo or Dumas.

What first catches the eye is the gaze: dark, slightly veiled, with an intensity that gives the model an immediate stage presence. The palette, dominated by warm browns, golds and the deep black of the background, effectively serves this representational portrait.

The work is monogrammed lower right, the initials "IG" or "JG" remaining to this day unattributed with certainty. Two old labels, bearing handwritten numbers in pen, testify to a now unidentified exhibition history.

Original canvas, keyed stretcher. Remarkable condition, with no apparent restoration. Presented in a wide-groove gilded frame, decorated with foliage carved in relief.

Work on view at the gallery (07240).
