Primitif Bono - Barques De Pêche Par Temps Calme - Oil On Cardboard - Signed
Artist: Bono Primitif (brescia, 1880 – Algérie, 1955)
Primitive BONO (Brescia, 1880 - Algeria, 1955)
Fishing boats in calm weather
Oil on board
Signed
24 × 17 cm - With frame: 42.5 × 32.5 cm
Very good condition
The composition brings together several sailing boats at rest on a calm sea, their masts silhouetted against a pearly sky of pale pink and bluish-gray hues. In the foreground are canoes, one of which is maneuvered by 2 rowers.
The brushstroke is vigorous and impastoed, treating the water in broad patches of dark blue enhanced by flashes of light, while the reddish-brown and ochre sails lend the whole a muted warmth, characteristic of the artist's southern palette.
Born in Brescia, Lombardy, Primitif Bono exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1920 to 1929, becoming a member (silver medal in 1927). A traveler, he visited Algeria, Tunisia, Spain and France before settling permanently in Algeria in 1939, where he worked until his death.
Molded wood frame with golden patina, circa 1975. Good overall condition.
Piece on view at the gallery (07240).
