The gouache treatment is very interesting: Winsberg used the material almost without water, with layers overlapping. The house benefits from a different, more uniform treatment, reflecting the lime coating of houses in southern Europe.
The work is in excellent condition. It is signed on the right, towards the center. It is extremely well framed, placed in a deep passepartout, itself surrounded by a matte black rubber frame. The whole is in excellent condition.
The artist
Born Jacques Gabriel Vanwinsberghe on March 17, 1929, in Paris, he would become known under the artistic name of Jacques Winsberg. Self-taught, he began painting at the age of 17, while pursuing a stage career: mime, cabaret singer and actor notably in the troupe of the Comédiens de Provence.
Winsberg is classified among the artists of the second School of Paris. He settled in 1956 in Eygalières where he became friends for a time with Raymond Guerrier. He lived successively in Eygalières (Bouches-du-Rhône), then in Belvézet (Gard) where he died.
"A figurative painter, he expresses his feelings in front of nature and beings. His work is situated around a few main themes: the Camargue, Spain, bullfighting, still lifes, portraits." according to the Bénézit Dictionary. Winsberg won the Young Painting Prize in 1956. He participated in numerous exhibitions: Salon des Indépendants (1954), Salon d'Automne (member in 1954), Salon de la Jeune Peinture, Biennale de Paris (1959), etc.
His works are present in public collections such as the Musée d'art moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Fonds national d'art contemporain, the Musée d'art contemporain Arteum (France), the Christchurch Art Gallery (New Zealand) and the Tate Gallery in London.
