Guglielmo Innocenti – Cattle Drinking At Dusk – Oil On Canvas - Signed
Artist: Innocenti Guglielmo (actif Fin Xixe Et Premier Tiers Xxe, Italie)
Cattle Drinking at Dusk, Herdsman
Guglielmo Innocenti, active in the late 19th and first third of the 20th centuries
Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 40.5 x 33 cm (as seen) — 50 x 42 cm with frame
Signed lower right “Innocenti”
This oil on canvas depicts a rural night scene: two oxen are drinking from a pond, their heads lowered toward the water, while a man stands beside them, leaning on a stick, his arms crossed. The sky occupies half the composition and is rendered in broad strokes of pink and gray, crossed at the horizon by the orange glow of a setting sun, whose reflections spread across the soggy ground and the water. The palette, consisting entirely of dark monochromatic tones, sets off the silhouettes of the keeper and the animals against the backlight, in a twilight atmosphere reminiscent of the rural naturalism popular in the late 19th century.
Frame
Gilded wooden frame with molded and carved fleur-de-lis decoration, late 19th or early 20th century, likely contemporary with the artwork. Repainted at a later date. No missing pieces.
Condition
Good overall condition. Visible craquelure, mainly in the dark areas of the background and the animals, consistent with the work’s age and not affecting the viewing of the composition.
The Artist
The signature “Innocenti” refers to Guglielmo Innocenti, an Italian painter active primarily in Rome and later in Paris during the late 19th century and the first third of the 20th century. His works are regularly featured at auction houses in France, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands, and are best known for genre scenes—tavern interiors, card players, portraits, and dancing figures—but also include, more occasionally, rural subjects comparable to that of our painting. Precise biographical details about this artist (place of birth, training) remain scarce to this day; he should not be confused with his namesake, the Roman painter Camillo Innocenti (1871–1961), whose style and career are quite distinct.
