Vintage molded wood frame
On a dark background, a pewter ewer with worked lid and handle dominates the composition. In front of it, an oval blue and white earthenware bowl holds white and black grapes, pears and vine leaves in autumnal colors. The whole is set on an oriental carpet with ochre and brown geometric motifs, whose bangs fall over the edge of the table.
The mastery of chiaroscuro and the care taken to render the materials - metal, ceramics, textiles, fruit flesh - testify to an in-depth knowledge of 17th-century Flemish and Dutch tradition. The brushstroke is muted in the shadows, more precise and luminous on the grapes and pewter reflections.
Signature and date: signed lower right. Dated 1976 according to the enclosed certificate of authenticity.
Back: certificate of authenticity from Galerie "Climat" (Les Sables d'Olonne) and Atelier d'Art Valli Gérard (Dijon), painting no. 105, sold March 25, 1976, red wax stamp. Wooden frame with middle rail, linen canvas, very good overall condition.
The artist
Jean Grimal (1942 - 1998) began his career as an advertising designer and illustrator, collaborating for many years with major Parisian agencies on prestigious accounts - Air France, Christofle, Peugeot, Lacoste. At the same time, he began exhibiting his paintings in galleries in Paris, Cannes and London, where they quickly attracted the attention of collectors. Forced to choose between the two activities, he finally devoted himself full-time to painting, developing a body of still-life work in the great European classical tradition. His acute sense of detail, inherited from his years as a draughtsman, undoubtedly contributes to the meticulousness with which he treats every surface, every reflection, every grain of fruit.
