A beautiful work with strong contrasts by the Toulon painter Laurent Mattio, depicting fishermen in their boats in a corner of the port on Porquerolles Island, most likely on the jetty in Anse Robert.
The artist uses a palette knife technique to give depth and life to his compositions.
A student of Cormon in Paris, Laurent Mattio exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1919.
In 1922, he was appointed professor at the Toulon School of Fine Arts.
In 1931, he decided to devote himself fully to painting and ceased teaching at the School of Fine Arts. He set up his studio in Sanary before returning to Toulon in 1947.
In 1930, the painter exhibited at the Galerie Alex Jouvène in Marseille.
The Museum Regards de Provence presented a beautiful exhibition dedicated to the artist, "Laurent Mattio, Painting Light," from March 25 to September 28, 2025.
Dimensions: 54 x 65 cm unframed and 73 x 84 cm with a beautiful carved and gilded wooden frame (old restorations to two corners of the frame).
