Beautiful work by Marseille painter Fortuné Viguier depicting a fisherman on the rocks at Carqueiranne in the Var between the communes of Hyères and Le Pradet .
The artist plays on the play of light and contrasts between the vegetation, the blue sea and the creamy sky.
Faithful to his habit, the painter always adds a character to his compositions, as here a fisherman holding his fishing rod.

We can relate our painting to another similar view by the painter that has passed on the art market and to a work kept at the National Gallery-Muséum of Alexandros Soutsou.

A student of Eugène Lagier, Emile Loubon and Philippe-Auguste Jeanron in Marseille, then of Léon Bonnat in Paris, Fortuné Viguier exhibited seaside and Provence landscapes at the Salon des artistes français from 1869 to 1881. He also frequented the exhibitions of the Association des artistes Marseillais and various Salons provençaux, where he regularly won awards between 1873 and 1891.
Fortuné Viguier was also a director of the Caisse d'Epargne de Marseille and president of the auxiliary office.
His works can be found in museums in Cannes, Marseille and Toulon.

Dimensions: 23.5 x 47 cm unframed and 33.5 x 56.5 cm with original gilded wood frame. The frame is subject to a few unaffected accidents and rework.
