Artist: Augustin Zwiller
ZWILLER Marie-Augustin (1850-1939)

"The Guitar Player"

Oil on canvas,
Signed lower right,
Cartouche with the artist's name on the frame.

A beautiful and large work by the Alsatian painter Marie-Augustin Zwiller, depicting a musician playing the guitar.
This recurring figure in the artist's works is embodied by the postman of Didenheim, the artist's birthplace near Mulhouse.

Like the artist Jean-Jacques Henner, Zwiller specialized in nudes, scenes of daily life in Alsace, and portraiture. An orphan, Marie-Augustin Zwiller found employment in a textile printing factory, where he was responsible for creating preparatory drawings. This first job allowed him to be admitted to the Mulhouse School of Drawing, where he won several prizes between 1867 and 1869.
He subsequently became a drawing teacher in Mulhouse.
He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1882 onwards and received numerous awards.
In 1883, he moved to Paris and set up his studio in Neuilly.
In 1912, Zwiller was named a member of the Paris Salon, which included the most celebrated painters of the time.

His works are held in private collections and in various French museums, notably the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Mulhouse and the Musée Sundgauvien in Altkirch.

Dimensions: 95 x 56 cm unframed and 109 x 70.5 cm with its original giltwood frame.
