“Corniche in Marseille”

Oil on cardboard,
Signed lower left,

A beautiful work by the Marseille painter Édouard Crémieux depicting a section of the Corniche in Marseille, most likely near Anse des Catalans, where the artist loved to paint.
The artist skillfully captures the atmosphere of a sunny summer day on the Mediterranean, where the colors and light are vivid. The painter pays particular attention to the subtle shades of the sea and sky.
A student of Guindon, then of Ferdinand Cormon, Bouguereau, and Tony-Fleury at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Édouard Salomon Crémieux returned to Marseille, where he established himself as one of the masters of the Provençal School. He set up his studio in the Old Port at 1 Quai Rive Neuve.
He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1884 to 1914 and in regional exhibitions (Aix, Avignon, Nîmes, Marseille, etc.). He devoted himself to painting Provençal landscapes and scenes of daily life.
As a Jew, he was deported on April 29, 1944, from the Drancy camp to Auschwitz and was murdered upon arrival in May 1944, along with his wife.

His works are now housed in museums in Cannes, Cassis, Marseille, and elsewhere.

Note: Three corners were previously restored; this has no impact on the artwork and is concealed by the frame.

This piece can be paired with the artist’s other painting currently for sale, “Boat in the Harbor of Marseille.”

Dimensions: 24 x 32.5 cm unframed and 40 x 48.5 cm with its modern wooden frame.
