Beautiful luminous work by the Marseille painter Paul Simons which represents an animated view of Martigues called "Provençal Venice".
Along the Saint-Sébastien canal, you can see the Madeleine church as well as the suspended fishermen's nets on the right.
The painter used a palette of warm colors, with shades of pink which perfectly captures the atmosphere of the place.
A student of Luc Olivier Merson and Jean-Paul Laurens, Paul Simons exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français from 1886 to 1897.
His depictions of Mediterranean landscapes in different tones depending on the seasons and times of day were praised by critics.
In 1902, Paul Simons was appointed official painter of the navy.
Dimensions: 21.5 x 33 cm without frame and 34 x 45 cm with its original, formerly re-gilded, frame.
