Artist in watercolour, oil and pastel painter, and writer, Wilfred James Haughton was the founding president of the Ulster Watercolor Society in 1977 and a member of the Watercolor Society of Ireland.
He has exhibited at the RHA, the RI, and participated in a series of solo exhibitions in London, Belfast, Dublin, and Limerick.
After a commercial career, he became a full-time artist in 1968.
Haughton was virtually self-taught, although he took classes from Jack Merriott and Edward Wesson. His goal was "to preserve the pure technique of watercolor in the face of the many additives that impair the clarity and vibrancy of the medium." He wrote the books Brush Aside and Purely Watercolor.
