Biography:She studied painting and printmaking at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, as well as sculpture with Ossip Zadkine at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Matter and light are at the heart of her artistic exploration. Her first solo exhibition took place in 1950: from that time on, she signed her work “Catty”; later, she would also use the surname “Catti” for some of the artist’s books or exhibitions in which she collaborated.
In 1953, she met the Romanian poet Ghérasim Luca, with whom she would be in a relationship for more than forty years. They moved to 8 rue Joseph-de-Maistre, but in the late 1980s, the studio where they lived (without hot water or a bathroom, and on the third floor under the roof) was deemed unfit for habitation by the authorities. They were then evicted. To secure new housing, Luca decided to become a naturalized French citizen, marrying his partner at the same time in 1990. Micheline Catty appeared in three short films by Robert Enrico, including La Rivière du hibou (1961). In 1980, she was one of the first artists to exhibit at the L’Usine gallery (102 Boulevard de la Villette, Paris 19th arrondissement)[1].
