Artist: édouard Crémieux
CREMIEUX Edouard (1856–1944)
“Fisherman on the Quay of the Old Port in Marseille”
Oil on canvas,
Signed lower right,
A beautiful work by the Marseille painter Édouard Crémieux depicting a fisherman on the quay of the Old Port in Marseille displaying his shellfish stall.
The artist has skillfully captured the atmosphere of an early morning, with the facades of the buildings on the Old Port illuminated by the first rays of sunlight. The painter pays particular attention to detail.
We can compare this work to a composition on a similar subject by the Marseille painter Théodore Jourdan.
A student of Guindon, then of Ferdinand Cormon, Bouguereau, and Tony-Fleury at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Edouard Salomon Crémieux returned to Marseille, where he established himself as one of the masters of the Provençal School. He set up his studio in the Old Port at 1 Quai Rive Neuve.
He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1884 to 1914 and in regional exhibitions (Aix, Avignon, Nîmes, Marseille…). He devoted himself to painting Provençal landscapes and scenes of daily life.
As a Jew, he was deported on April 29, 1944, from the Drancy camp to Auschwitz and was murdered upon arrival in May 1944 along with his wife.
His works are now housed in museums in Cannes, Cassis, Marseille, and elsewhere.
Dimensions: 35.5 x 29 cm unframed and 52 x 45.5 cm with its modern wooden frame.
