"Andalusian woman with a fan and a flower"

Oil on canvas,
Signed and dated 1912 or 1913 lower right,

Beautiful bright and colorful work by the painter from Agde Ernest Azema which represents a young Andalusian woman with a fan and a flower in her mouth.
In the 1910s, the artist produced a series of paintings representing Andalusian women often called "Carmen" with their typical attributes: fans, flowers, fruits, traditional clothes...

Ernest Azema left school very early to work as a masonry worker with his father. Subsequently, he entered the Regional School of Fine Arts in Montpellier where he studied painting with Ernest Michel, architecture with Alphonse Goudès and sculpture with Auguste Baussan.
After his military service in 1891, Ernest Azema continued his training at the school of Fine Arts in Paris where he was a student in the studios of Fernand Cormon and Gustave Moreau.
He exhibited at the Salon des artistes français from 1872 to 1912. He twice won the second grand prix de Rome in 1900 and 1901.
In 1909, he moved to Marseille and then to Bessan where his brother Auguste lived.
Among his brothers: Auguste (1868-1948) became a sculptor and Louis (1876-1963) was a painter.

His works can be seen at the Musées des Beaux-arts in Béziers and at the Musée Paul-Valéry in Sète.

Note: Old restorations, without impact, visible on the back of the canvas.
