COURANT Maurice (1847-1926)

"Quai Chanzy and the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer"

Oil on canvas,
Signed and dated 1911 lower left,

Beautiful and large work by the Le Havre painter Maurice Courant which represents the Quai Chanzy and the maritime port of Boulogne-sur-Mer animated by numerous characters. In the background, we can see the Quai Gambetta, a general view of the old town and the Saint-Pierre church.
The painting is treated with small touches in color agreements dominated by blues, grays and browns.

This work is a beautiful testimony to the animation of the port of the city of Boulogne-sur-Mer at the beginning of the 20th century.

Our work was most certainly exhibited at the Salon of 1911, under the title "The maritime quay", where the artist presented that year a set of paintings and watercolors on the city of Boulogne-sur-Mer.

Student of Ernest Meissonnier (1815-1891), Maurice Courant quickly broke away from the influence of his master and the academic style to specialize in seascapes, notably representing the Opal Coast and the Breton Coast.
He exhibited at the Salon des Artists Français from 1868 and became known for several paintings: "Bassin du Roy", "Fishing boats at low tide"...
His work was praised by critics and rewarded with a silver medal at the Universal Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900 in Paris.

From 1906 to 1913, he undertook several trips to England, Holland and Belgium.
Maurice Courant painted mainly on the motif, as evidenced by the artist's obituary published in "Le Petit Havre". The artist succeeded in capturing the effects of light in his compositions and in perfectly transcribing the atmosphere of his cloudy skies through a palette of colors often in blues, grays and browns.

He also pays particular attention to the many details in his compositions.

Note: Some cracks, without any impact, are to be noted in the sky.

Dimensions: 60.5 x 81.5 cm without frame and 82.5 x 103 cm with its original wooden frame in the Regency style.
