"Smile of May - Fishermen in the Bay of Cannes"
Oil on canvas,
Signed lower right and dated "1932" lower left,
Titled, countersigned, and dated on the back of the stretcher by the artist: "Smile of May - Cannes 1932 - Louis Pastour".
This beautiful work by the Cannes painter Louis Pastour depicts fishermen in the Bay of Cannes on a summer's day. The old town and the Suquet district can be seen in the background.
As was his custom, the artist plays with light and contrasts to bring poetry to his work.
The large, sharp red sail, like a wing, the typical boats, the light of the sky and the sea... all immerse us in the atmosphere of old Cannes during the Belle Époque.
A factory worker by day and a student in the evenings at the School of Decorative Arts in Nice and later Paris, he exhibited for the first time at the age of 45. In 1902, he founded the Cannes Fine Arts Association with a group of art-loving workers, serving as its general secretary. Through this association, local painters were showcased in an annual exhibition.
A painter of light with complete mastery of color, Louis Pastour used the palette knife technique to bring his works to life.
He was recognized by critics as a painter-poet because of the poetic titles he gave his works: Fête de soleil (Festival of the Sun), Reflets d'or (Golden Reflections), Gloire au matin (Glory to the Morning)...
Note: Some old cracks are visible, but do not affect the appreciation of the work.
Dimensions: 38 x 61 cm unframed and 57.5 x 80.5 cm with its frame by Maison RG Paris in carved and gilded wood.
