A beautiful, colorful work by the Marseille painter Eugène de Barberiis depicting the bustling Port de la Ponche, featuring a fisherman in his tartane in the fishermen’s quarter of Saint-Tropez. In the background, one can make out a view of the village and the Tour-Vieille.
With delicate brushstrokes, Eugène de Barberiis strives to accurately capture the nuances of color on the sun-drenched facades and the hue of the sea.
In his Provençal landscapes, the painter engages in a constant exploration of Mediterranean light.

A student of Bouguereau, Tony Robert-Fleury, Edouard Detaille, and Berne-Bellecour, Eugène de Barberiis exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1878 to 1901.
In his early career, he primarily presented subjects depicting the daily life of soldiers. In 1890, he returned to Marseille and turned to landscape painting. He subsequently settled in Sanary and painted the surrounding area until the end of his life.
In 1912, he exhibited 80 paintings depicting the city of Marseille and its surroundings at the Galerie Centrales d’art moderne in Marseille.
A friend of local painters such as Jean Baptiste Olive and Édouard Crémieux, he participated in exhibitions and salons throughout the region.
