Vidal, Gustave (1895–1966) “mazet With Cypress Trees In The Alpilles” Provence Avignon Paris
Artist: Gustave Vidal
VIDAL Gustave (1895–1966)
"Mazet in the Alpilles"
Oil on panel,
Signed lower right,
Titled on the back by the artist: "No. 6 Route de Provence - The Mazet with the Cypress"
A beautiful, high-contrast work by the painter Gustave Vidal depicting a stone mazet on the edge of a path in Provence, most likely in the Alpilles near Fontvieille, where the artist liked to set up his easel.
In the foreground, we see figures sitting and chatting in front of the mazet, as well as a man walking along the path.
The artist has perfectly captured the various shades of color and the play of light on a summer day in Provence.
He was a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Avignon under the guidance of painter Pierre Grivolas, who encouraged his students—including Gustave Vidal—to paint outdoors. He was influenced by the New School of Avignon and abstract painters.
His distinctive style combines the palette knife technique with pictorial stylization. He received numerous awards early in his career and has exhibited around the world.
Dimensions: 50.5 x 65.5 cm unframed and 63 x 78 cm with its patinated wooden Montparnasse frame.
