Montagne Louis (1879–1960) “bustling Street In Villeneuve Lez Avignon” Provence Paris France

Artist: Louis Agricol Montagné

MONTAGNE Louis Agricol (1879–1960)

“Lively Street in Villeneuve-lez-Avignon”

Oil on canvas,
Signed lower right,
Titled on the back of the stretcher by the artist in somewhat illegible handwriting “Chemin du Montagnet ??” and dated “24...1900,”

A beautiful work by the Avignon painter Louis-Agricol Montagné depicting a path through the garrigue in Villeneuve-lez-Avignon in the early 20th century. The artist has enlivened his composition with a man carrying a spade on his shoulder, as if he were returning from work.
Here, Louis Montagné offers us a work true to Provence, with a colorful, sun-drenched, and finely detailed composition.

A student of Paul Saïn and Cormon, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français beginning in 1901, where he received numerous awards for his entries. He began exhibiting early on in Avignon at the galleries of Kassler and Mouret and, during this period, created decorative panels in collaboration with the painter Paul Saïn.
Wounded during World War I, he lost an eye. This did not prevent him from pursuing a brilliant career.
He was appointed director of the École des Beaux-Arts d’Avignon from 1920 to 1928.
Louis-Agricol Montagné was a member of the Groupe des 13.

Dimensions: 27 x 40.5 cm (artwork only) and 36.6 x 50 cm with its modern wooden frame.
