"View of Avignon in Autumn, 1897"
Oil on canvas,
Signed and dated 1897 lower right,
Beautiful work by the Avignon painter Jean-Baptiste Brunel which represents a general view of the city of Avignon from the island of Barthelasse in Avignon.
In the foreground we can see the vegetation of the island of Barthelasse with its dawns and the aquatic plants on the banks of the Rhône. The artist has perfectly succeeded in the reflections on the water. In the background we can see the city of Avignon with its emblematic monuments: the ramparts, the Pont d'Avignon, the Rocher des Doms and the Palais des Papes.
The color palette used by the artist perfectly represents the colors of the vegetation and the creamy sky of an autumn day.
A student of Paul Saïn, Bougereau and Tony Robert-Fleury, he exhibited from 1884 to 1914 at the Salon des artistes français. He devoted himself to painting the landscapes of Avignon and its surroundings in a classical and faithful manner. He strived to use a faithful color palette giving harmony in the tones of the seasons. Nicknamed the "Painter of Dawns" because of his many paintings freezing the morning dawn, which our painting bears witness to.
He has the particularity of making vaporous skies in shades of gray and pink according to the weather and the seasons.
Note: An old small restoration is to be noted and visible on the back of the canvas.
Dimensions: 68 x 92 cm without frame and 85 x 108 cm with its original wooden frame.
