"Mother and her child on the path"
Original oil on canvas on new frame,
Signed lower right,
Beautiful work by the Avignon painter, Pierre Grivolas, which depicts a family on the side of the road. The artist has chosen to represent here an intimate moment of Avignon peasant life, namely a moment of meditation, of prayer. Indeed, processions, leaving mass, Corpus Christi, solemn communions seem to be a theme dear to the artist. No doubt because this allows him to express his desire to bear witness to Provençal traditions.
A student of Ingres, Delacroix and Flandrin, he exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1864 and 1882. A friend of the poets Félibrige, he will strive to translate the traditions of Provence and Comtadines. In 1878, he was appointed director of the Ecole des Beaux-arts in Avignon, a position he held until his death in 1906. Considered the leader of the New School of Avignon, he inspired many of his students, future artists, through his outdoor teaching and his virtuosity in the use of colors, including white.
The Louis Vouland Foundation in Avignon organized a major retrospective, with more than a hundred of the artist's works, from November 2008 to January 2009, for which a book was published. The work presented is unpublished and does not appear in this book.
Dimensions: 55 x 35 cm without its frame and 46 x 66 cm with its original gilded wood frame.
