"Gypsies in Provence"

Oil on panel,
Signed lower right
Titled on the back by the artist: "Bohémiens,"

A beautiful, luminous work by the Avignon painter Joseph Hurard depicting a family of Gypsies in a caravan on a path by the sea, likely in the vicinity of Martigues or Sanary.
The artist used a palette of vivid colors and played with contrasts.

A student of Pierre Grivolas and Charles Vionnet in Avignon, Joseph Hurard exhibited numerous landscapes—notably of Avignon and Villeneuve-les-Avignon—at the Salon des Indépendants from 1908 to 1914. He joined the Groupe des Treize, founded by Clément Brun.
After World War I, he exhibited in galleries in Marseille.
In 1932, he settled in Martigues, a location he had been painting since 1913.

Dimensions: 50 x 73 cm without the frame and 61 x 84 cm with its original wooden frame, which was previously resized.
