Beautiful work by Provencal master Auguste Chabaud depicting two women washing laundry at the Mas Martin washhouse in Graveson.
This work by the Graveson painter is typical of his production, using a pure color palette and playing on the play of light and contrasts to represent Provence.
A basket and wheelbarrow filled with laundry can be seen at the entrance to the washhouse in front of the flower beds.

We can relate our work to another composition by the artist entitled "Le lavoir fleuri", sold on April 24, 2010 at Damien LECLERC in Marseille.

Pierre Grivolas' student at the Ecole des Beaux-arts in Avignon. In 1898, he moved to Paris to continue his studies. He attended Cormon's classes as an auditor, and frequented the Académie Julian and Carrière, where he made friends with the painter Henri Matisse.
Following the agricultural crisis in the Midi region, which affected his family's property in Graveson, the painter Auguste Chabaud signed up as a pilot on a cargo ship bound for Senegal and Dahomey to support himself.
From 1903 to 1906, he did his military service in Tunisia. In 1906, he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne, and began sculpting in 1911.

In 1913, he was mobilized for the First World War. He continued to exhibit in Paris, notably at the Salon des Tuilleries. At the same time, he published and illustrated various works.
From 1920, he began his blue period, using pure Prussian blue, in which Provence, its interiors and its characters are highlighted.

His works are held in various museums in France: Aix en Provence, Arles, Avignon, Bordeaux Lyon, Nantes, Montpellier .. and abroad.
A museum is also entirely dedicated to him in Graveson.

Dimensions: 38 x 53.5 cm unframed and 51 x 67 cm with its modern black wooden "caisse américaine" frame.
