Mero Ameglio - Les Martigues - View Of The Busy Canal - Oil On Panel - Signed
Artist: Ameglio Merio ( 1897, Italie – 1970, France)
AMÉGLIO Mério (San Remo, 1897 - Paris, 1970)
Les Martigues - Vue du canal animé
Oil on panel
Signed lower right Merio Ameglio
Panel: 79.5 × 45 cm - Frame: 87 × 52.5 cm
Very good condition
In the foreground, two traditional boats - a tartane with ochre sails on the right, a sailboat with white sails on the left - frame the canal in enfilade. The sandy bank on the right is bustling with dry-pulled boats; on the left bank, fishermen and strollers busy themselves along the quays. In the background, the gilded facades of the fishermen's houses stretch out on either side of a single-arched bridge, topped by the town's characteristic bell tower. The sky, worked in broad, light impasto, animates the composition with luminous movement.
The brushstroke is distinctly post-impressionist, applied with energetic knife and brush: the reflections on the water, treated as colored commas, reveal the artist's mastery of rendering Mediterranean light. The large dimensions of this painting make it one of the most ambitious of Améglio's Provençal views to come to public sale.
Presented in a simple, sober, contemporary matte black baguette, it enhances the chromatic force of the composition without competing with it.
Born in San Remo in 1897, Mério Améglio spent his childhood in the south of France before moving to Montmartre, where he enrolled in the École de Paris. He exhibited at the Paris Salons, winning an honorable mention in 1938 for his Cathédrale de Rouen. One of his favorite subjects was Martigues, which he painted on several occasions. He died in Paris in 1970.
Work on view at the gallery (07240).
