In this silkscreen print with its bold and vibrant colors, Joël Cazaux unfolds his unique graphic universe, halfway between unabashed primitivism and pop modernity. A monumental female figure, rendered in flat areas of deep red and burnt earth, occupies the center of the composition. Her hair falls in horizontal golden waves, while to her left, a bird with dark plumage points its long, sharp beak—an allegory of the piercing gaze, a direct echo of the title. At her feet, a fantastical animal in intense cobalt blue hues, evoking a stylized dog or wolf, anchors the scene in a personal, mythological bestiary.

The background, worked in gradients of pearl gray and salmon, is punctuated by diagonal white incisions that lend the whole an almost engraved texture, reminiscent of the intaglio tradition. The treatment of the forms—synthetic and hieratic—evokes pre-Columbian art, ancient Egypt, and African sculpture.

An emblematic work reflecting Cazaux's sensitivity to the myth of love and metamorphosis, this piece combines decorative power with symbolic density.

The work is in excellent condition, mounted under glass and a passe-partout. Frame: White lacquered wooden frame, minor signs of age.

Joël Cazaux (Dinard, 1940)
Trained at the École Estienne and then with the Belgian painter Marc Stockman, Joël Cazaux perfected his mastery of engraving at Atelier 17 in Paris—the renowned intaglio workshop founded by Stanley William Hayter—between 1967 and 1968. From 1969 to 2000, he taught visual arts at the École des Beaux-Arts d'Architecture in Paris.

In 1977, he settled in the Perche region, from where he has developed a body of work blending painting, sculpture, and printmaking, nourished by the archaic traditions of great civilizations—Egyptian, Aztec, and African.

His work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions in France, Switzerland, and Germany.

The artwork can be viewed and collected from the gallery (07240).
