Very good condition: a small chip on the front of the base; slight discoloration on the back
Rock-shaped base, cast as a single piece with the animal
Head lowered, shoulders forward, the panther slowly descends from her rock. She has spotted something. Ninin captures the moment when the feline slows down, just before springing into action.
The modeling focuses on the essentials: a long, sleek body, shoulder blades rolling beneath the skin, a mouth slightly parted to reveal its fangs. The tail falls along the rock and rests upon it.
On the front, the body rests against a boulder adorned with stylized tall grasses. This relief decoration adds rhythm to the composition and sets the scene in the bush. The back, more unadorned, leaves the entire space to the line of the back and the long tail.
The creamy enamel, glossy and speckled with small brown dots, evokes the grain of stone. It catches the light and highlights every curve of the body. The underside is hollow and pierced with two firing vents.
The panther is one of the major subjects of Art Deco. Several copies of this model were produced for customers of Parisian department stores. This one stands out for its excellent condition.
Condition
Very good overall condition. A small chip on the front of the base, on the front face. Slight discoloration on the back (see photo). Normal signs of wear on the unglazed rim of the underside.

Little is known about G. Ninin, whose first name has not been identified. A sculptor active in the 1930s, he created ceramic pieces sold by major Parisian department stores, notably the BHV and the Grands Magasins du Louvre. His repertoire includes draped female figures, often accompanied by animals, and animal subjects—including several panthers—in ivory, celadon, or black glaze. His works are a fine example of the Art Deco style of that era: meticulously crafted sculptures designed to fit into the interiors of their time.
