Lillie Honnorat - Deux Bouquets De Roses Et Fleurs Des Champs - Oil On Canvas - 19th Century - Signed
Artist: Honnorat Lillie (xixe – Xxe)
LILLIE HONNORAT (XIXe-XXe siècle)
Bouquet de roses et fleurs des champs dans deux vases
Oil on canvas, keyed frame
Signed and dated lower right: Lillie Honnorat 1891
64.5 × 48 cm (canvas) - 71 × 56.5 cm (framed)
Modern bronze patina frame, very good condition
The composition revolves around two containers arranged in depth. In the foreground, a small copper vase - whose hot metal can be made out by a characteristic sheen - holds a tight bouquet of red, pink and white roses, mingled with their dark green leaves. Behind it, a large dark sandstone vase with a glazed neck carries a more ethereal composition: white chrysanthemums, delicate asters in mauve and bluish tones, dark foliage, and two receding roses that echo the bouquet in the foreground.
The whole is treated with lively, impastoed strokes, with directness: no over-sophisticated arrangement, but the right feel of a bouquet picked and placed. The background, animated by broad brushstrokes of ochre and warm brown, gives the composition a luminous depth.
Note that an area in the upper right-hand corner shows a slight difference in workmanship, probably testifying to an earlier restoration intervention.
Condition: canvas on keyed stretcher. Three visible repairs on the reverse; slight old intervention in the upper right-hand corner, with no effect on the overall reading of the work.
Frame: bronze patina, modern, very good condition.
Lillie Honnorat was a Provençal painter active between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, whose known output is devoted almost exclusively to still lifes. Biographical information about her remains sketchy, but the technical mastery attested by this 1891 canvas suggests careful training.
Work on view at the gallery (07240).
