Gilded frame in the Napoleon III style
This watercolor depicts a view of the inner courtyard of the Hôtel de Cluny, in Paris, with its Flamboyant Gothic façade and arcaded gallery, partially obscured by the foliage of a large tree. The autumn light, filtered through the foliage, brings the stone and the stained-glass windows to life. The artist, a renowned watercolorist of the Belle Époque, demonstrates here her mastery in rendering light and historic architecture.
In perfect condition.
Napoleon III-style wooden frame with gilded stucco, decorated with laurel leaves. A few very small areas where the gilding is missing; in very good overall condition.
The Artist
Marie-Thérèse Dethan-Roullet, née Roullet, was born on February 24, 1870, in Ars-en-Ré, in Charente-Maritime. She was the niece of the painter Gaston Roullet, an official painter of the Navy, and the grandniece of the painter Jules Noël. It was only natural that she would train in painting and watercolor under her uncle’s guidance, and later under that of François Rivoire.
In 1900, she married the pharmacist Georges Dethan and adopted the artist name Marie-Thérèse Dethan-Roullet. She set up her studio on the top floor of her husband’s townhouse on Rue Alphonse-de-Neuville in Paris, and also painted at their estate in Chérence, near Giverny and Vétheuil.
She exhibited regularly from 1901 to 1939: at the Salon of the Union of Women Painters and Sculptors, at the Galerie Georges Petit, at the Salon of the Society of French Artists, and at exhibitions of the International Society of Watercolorists. In 1914, she was named an Officer of the Academy. She died in Paris in 1945.
Her work, now highly sought after at public auctions, consists mainly of landscapes, scenes of Parisian life, and architectural views rendered in watercolor with great luminous finesse.
