The rocks of the gorge, the half-timbered houses, and the two spires of the town church are clearly visible. In the foreground, a fragment of a staircase climbing up the rock accentuates the feeling of realism, of the landscape as it appears to the draftsman.
The drawing is signed lower left.
It is very fresh, without foxing. The location is indicated on the back of the drawing. Small crease in the top right corner, traces of handling at the bottom.
The work is placed under glass, in a mat, in a varnished wooden frame.
The artist
Nicolas Chapuy was born in Paris in 1790 and died in the same city in 1858. First trained at the École Polytechnique and an officer in the naval engineers' corps, he later became a lithographer, specializing in drawing monuments. He is known for having produced a series of lithographs dedicated to the cathedrals of France. From 1840, he traveled to several European countries, including Germany. Our drawing most likely dates from this period.
Nicolas Chapuy was a romantic draftsman, who allowed his subjectivity to shine through in his works. He focused on creating atmospheres rather than reproducing the smallest detail.
His works are rare on the market.
