E. Marino - Twilight On The River At The Mill - Oil On Canvas - Signed
Artist: E. Marino (actif Fin Xixe – Début Xxe)
E. MARINO (active late 19th - early 20th century)
Dusk on the river at the mill
Oil on canvas
Signed lower left
40.5 × 21.5 cm - With frame: 51 × 32 cm
Very good condition
On the bank of a calm river, a water mill with white walls and a red-tiled roof shelters under a large leafy tree; the paddle wheel, visible in the wall embrasure, testifies to the site's activity. In the background, two fishermen linger at the water's edge in the fading light, while the surface of the river reflects a vaporous sky with pinkish and bluish-gray hues characteristic of the twilight hour.
Executed in a lively impressionist touch, this oil on canvas is in the tradition of late 19th-century Ile-de-France river landscapes, in the wake of the Barbizon School and the painters of the Seine and Marne rivers. The treatment of foliage, the soft palette and the way the figures are framed in a few quick strokes are so closely reminiscent of the production of Galien-Laloue and his entourage that the question of a pseudonym is worth asking.
The elongated vertical format - unusual for this type of subject, which ordinarily calls for the horizontal - lends the composition a singular elegance and suggests that the artist deliberately worked in series on this atypical template.
Frame : baguette flat dark wood, modern.
Work on view at the gallery (07240).
