Double-sided watercolor, presented in a reversible frame.
This sheet features two watercolors, one on each side, both by Antoine Calbet. We had it framed so that the owner can choose—and change at will—which side is displayed: simply flip the sheet over in its frame. Both sides are protected by a mat.
On the front, a young woman is seated and resting, seen in a three-quarter view from behind, her head turned in profile to the right. She is wearing a pale pink dance skirt, a red ruffled collar, and long black gloves; a guitar rests across her knees. The linework is free-flowing, the watercolor applied in fluid strokes and enlivened by a few highlights of white. It is a backstage or rest scene, in the spirit of the subjects of dancers and musicians dear to the artist. This side bears the signature and a handwritten dedication.
On the reverse, a study of a female nude seen from the back, reclining in the woods, accompanied by a second figure. The foliage is rendered in a fresh palette of blues, greens, and yellows, with the watercolor left very loose. The preparatory pencil lines remain visible in places. Here we see Calbet’s favorite theme: the nude woman relaxing in the great outdoors, rendered with spontaneity, in the style of a quick sketch.
Technique. Watercolor on paper (both sides).
Frame. Modern frame made of wood painted matte black. Reversible mounting; both watercolors are mounted on mat boards.
Condition. Very good overall condition.

The Artist
Antoine Calbet was born on August 16, 1860, in Engayrac (Lot-et-Garonne) and died on August 21, 1942, in Paris. He first trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier under Édouard-Antoine Marsal, then enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in Alexandre Cabanel’s studio. He began exhibiting in 1880 and became a member of the Société des Artistes Français. His official career was marked by several medals at the Salon, a silver medal at the 1900 World’s Fair, and the Officer’s Cross of the Legion of Honor.
Equally skilled in watercolor and pastel, he joined the Society of French Watercolorists in 1903 and the Society of French Pastelists in 1911. He was also a sought-after illustrator (for authors such as Pierre Louÿs, Henri de Régnier, Verlaine, and Ronsard). His works are featured notably at the Musée d’Orsay, the Petit Palais, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Agen, the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse, and the Dallas Museum of Art.
