Fély-mouttet - Still Life With A Teapot - Oil On Canvas - Signed
Artist: Fély-mouttet Marius (1893 – 1953, France)
Marius FÉLY-MOUTTET (1893 - 1953, France)
Nature morte à la théière
Vers 1930-40
Oil on canvas
55.5 × 46 cm - 72 × 63 cm with frame
Signed lower left Fély-Mouttet
Very good condition.
On a dark tray with warm highlights, a silver-plated teapot dominates the composition with its round, gleaming form, surrounded by red apples, a yellow cup on its saucer and a few scattered fruits. In the background, a green glass soliflore vase holds a bouquet of pink flowers with slender stems, standing out against a background of golden ochre drapery, treated in broad, vibrant strokes that flood the canvas with southern light.
The frank palette - yellows, reds, blues - and the freedom of the brushstrokes lend this still life a luminous, direct joy, characteristic of Fély-Mouttet's manner.
Original canvas, single stretcher. Very good condition. Bronze and textile patina frame, 1970s.
The artist
Born in Collobrières in the Var region of France, Marius Fély-Mouttet is a Provencal painter whose work is part of the post-impressionist tradition inherited from Cézanne. Attentive to the light of the Midi, he prefers still lifes, Provencal landscapes and scenes with figures, using a lively palette and energetic brushstrokes. He exhibited at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in Paris, alongside artists associated with Robert and Sonia Delaunay, demonstrating his openness to the modernist currents of his time.
His work, associated with the Provencal school, is now a regular feature at French auctions.
Work on view at the gallery (07240).
