In this small canvas from 1956, Roger Dérieux deploys a plastic vocabulary freed from any descriptive realism: a figure sketched in profile, captured in the reader's attitude, stands out against a background structured in broad solids - brown, red, midnight blue, violet - punctuated by rapid black lines. The silhouette in deep pink, treated almost as a solid, converses with an open gray book in the center of the composition, while stylized black forms - jug, candlestick - enliven the left-hand side of the canvas. The warm, contrasting palette, economy of drawing and freedom of chromatic construction reflect the dual lessons of Matisse and Bonnard, assimilated through Dérieux's training in André Lhote's studio at La Grande Chaumière.

Executed at the heart of the artist's figurative period, this Personnage rose belongs to a series of small, intimate formats in which Dérieux explores the possibilities of color as architecture. A figure of the Nouvelle École de Paris, close to the poet Francis Ponge, Dérieux built up an independent body of work, rejecting both academicism and fashion, and whose coherence never ceased to assert itself until his death in 2015.

Provenance: Artist's studio collection; sale of Roger Dérieux's studio collection, Artenchères, Lyon, April 30, 2026; private collection.
