Who wouldn’t recognize Paris at first glance? Pierre Moberg places us on the banks of the Seine, facing a row of old buildings, on a spring day.
All the Parisian details are there. The gray-blue zinc roofs, pierced by dormer windows. The chimney stacks lined up against the sky. The facades pressed close together, with their tall windows. In the center, a pinkish building features a wrought-iron balcony and opens onto the ground floor through a series of arches. Below, the quay’s large stone wall, with its built-in steps leading down to the water. To the left, a small boat is moored at the river’s edge.
On the quay, life goes on as usual. Walkers pass beneath the trees; a figure is busy near a ladder. The plane trees are just beginning to sprout their first leaves: soft green, pale yellow, with a few touches of pink.
What strikes the viewer most is the texture. Moberg applies the paint in very thick layers, using a palette knife and a brush. The paint forms real reliefs: one could almost trace the outlines of the windows or the contours of the branches with a finger. Even the sky is rendered in relief, in luminous mauves and grays. The shadows on the quay are rendered in vivid purple, a splash of color that brings the entire scene to life.
The painting is set in a light-colored, varnished wooden frame from the 1960s, in very good condition.
The Artist
Pierre Moberg is a French painter born in 1911. He gained recognition in the 1950s for his views of Paris: the banks of the Seine, rooftops, and the streets of Montmartre, often captured in a misty atmosphere. He also painted in Touraine.
He exhibited in Paris, in several cities across France, as well as in the Middle East and numerous other countries. He received the Daguerre Prize in 1959, followed by the City of Paris Gold Medal in 1960.
The later years of his career remain poorly documented, but his views of Paris are now sought after by enthusiasts of the capital.
