Jean François Hick (1933–2011) Belgian School
Jean Francois Hick, who also signs his works as Jean Hick, is a Belgian painter, illustrator, engraver, and pastel artist born in 1933.
He was also an excellent musician, violinist, and jazz enthusiast.
He officially began his career as a painter at the age of twenty-two with his first exhibition.
It was on this occasion that he met the famous painter Léopold Plomteux, who introduced him to abstraction.
As such, he is the first Belgian artist to have practiced lyrical abstraction.
Jean Hick’s painting forges connections with music and poetry.
His generally colorful palette is an exaltation of light that draws parallels between color waves and sound waves.
In 2008, the Liège Museum of Fine Arts dedicated a retrospective exhibition to his work.
The work I am presenting to you powerfully illustrates the main characteristics of this painter: vibrant colors and the rhythmic power of his brushstrokes.
It is a work on panel.
This generously sized painting dates from 1968. It is signed and titled on the back: “North Sea in Haight-Ashbury.”
It is framed in a studio-style frame made of matte black lacquered wood.
An artist to watch, whose significance is widely recognized in Belgium.
