Jeanne Portenart (1911–1991), Belgian School

Jeanne Portenart was a Belgian artist born in Brussels in 1911; she died there in 1991.
She trained in painting first at the Institut des Métiers d'Art in Etterbeek and then at the Brussels Academy.
Her work evolved throughout her career, spanning several 20th-century artistic movements.
She began with a surrealist style, moved toward lyrical abstraction, went through a neo-symbolist period, participated in Aubin Pasque’s Fantasmagie movement, and ultimately arrived at a poetic figurative style.
Her work is represented in numerous major museums in Belgium.

The piece I am offering here could be associated with the Fantasmagie movement around 1960.
The work has retained all the luminosity of its original vibrant colors.
It is titled “Apocalypse” on the back, a word whose etymological origin means “unveiling” or “revelation.”
This painting on wood is framed in its original “atelier”-style frame made of matte black-stained wood.
Here, then, is a striking work by a prominent artist that will look stunning on your wall.
