Roger Dérieux (Paris, 1922 – Pern, Lot, 2015)
The Beach, ca. 1950
Oil on paper

Very good condition
Certificate of authenticity + studio sale stamp
This oil on paper depicts a lively beach scene, rendered with broad swaths of color. In the foreground, the sand forms a wide ochre band. Behind it, the sea is a beautiful turquoise, across which a white sailboat glides. The mauve sky is framed by a line of dark hills and trees with straight trunks.
The beach is covered with beach umbrellas and stretched canopies, painted white. The shadows they cast are rendered in pale green. A single orange beach umbrella stands out on the left. Among them, numerous bathers are reduced to simple silhouettes: pink, brown, and ochre spots. In the foreground, a large white sphere—a balloon or a closed beach umbrella—and several figures lying down.
Dérieux does not seek detail. He constructs the beach as an assemblage of flat shapes and bold colors. The composition is luminous, rhythmic, and full of summer cheer. The location is not identified, but the light and the umbrella pines evoke a Mediterranean coastline. This is a work characteristic of the artist’s figurative period, influenced by the teachings of André Lhote and the examples set by Matisse and Bonnard.
Condition and Provenance
Oil on paper in very good condition, with fresh colors; unsigned. Presented in a modern black frame with a cream mat. On the back, a stamp from the studio sale: “Atelier Roger Derieux – ArtEnchères – April 30, 2026.”
The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued on May 11, 2026, by Béatrice Peyret-Vignals, the artist’s daughter and legatee (the certificate lists rounded dimensions of 21 × 27 cm).
The Artist
Roger Dérieux trained at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, in André Lhote’s studio. As a member of the Nouvelle École de Paris, he developed, beginning in 1947, a clear and colorful figurative style influenced by Matisse and Bonnard. Landscapes, seascapes, and still lifes are rendered in luminous blocks of color, in a spirit of synthesis. A friend of the poet Francis Ponge, he pursued a long career divided between Paris, the Ardèche, and the Lot.
