Biography:

Marcel Belle (1871–1948) was a French painter whose work, marked by sensitivity and modernity, is part of the Post-Impressionist movement of the early 20th century. Trained at the independent art schools of Montparnasse and a student of Henri Martin, he developed a personal pictorial language in which light and color play an essential role.

A recognized artist during his lifetime, he exhibited at the Salon d’Automne beginning in 1920, then at the Salon des Indépendants starting in 1926, before becoming an associate member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1938. The prestigious Bernheim-Jeune gallery also dedicated a solo exhibition to him, a testament to the recognition he enjoyed.

His works poetically celebrate the landscapes of the Creuse Valley, the shores of the Basque Country, and certain Parisian views. Through broad, colorful brushstrokes and a refined composition, Marcel Belle captures the atmosphere and light with remarkable elegance, in a style that sometimes evokes the great landscape painters of his era, notably Albert Marquet, as is the case with this work.

The Work:

This oil painting by Marcel Belle reflects the artist’s deep sensitivity to urban landscapes and the play of light. The silent barges moored along the quays, the snow enveloping the riverbanks, and the arches of Paris’s oldest bridge compose a scene of great serenity.

With a free and synthetic touch, the artist captures the hushed atmosphere of a winter Paris, emphasizing the effects of light and the harmonies of grays, blues, and whites. This approach, reminiscent of Post-Impressionism, lends the work a timeless modernity and elegance.
