A thick mass of cloud closes the horizon and deliberately obscures the island, which is perceived more through depth, the interplay of light, and the breathing of space than through a literal description of the landscape. In the foreground, the rocks emerge powerfully, rendered with a palette knife in a dense and controlled impasto, while the calm, slightly iridescent sea reflects the muted nuances of the sky. The deliberately restrained palette—pearly grays, leaden blues, ochres, and warm earth tones—lends the whole a great pictorial nobility and a meditative atmosphere. Through this suggestive approach, Dieudonné Jacobs does not seek to represent a specific place, but rather a Mediterranean feeling.
