Charles Thévenin (1764–1838) “Storming of the Bastille, July 14, 1789” Large engraving from the Revolutionary period, drawn, engraved, and published by the artist himself. A powerful historical scene depicting the popular assault on the fortress, typical of Thévenin's patriotic work in the 1790s. Lower left: “Drawn and engraved by C. Thévenin.” Lower right: “In Paris at the Author's, rue l'Évêque, Butte St Roch.” Original engraving, early print, with very detailed intaglio printing. Some minor foxing, normal for its age, but not serious; overall well preserved and presented in a simple modern frame. Framed dimensions: 76 × 58 cm. Scene dimensions: 57 × 40 cm. Period: late 18th – early 19th century. Technique: etching and engraving. Condition: very good, scattered foxing, frame ready to hang. A listed artist and former director of the French Academy in Rome, Charles Thévenin is particularly sought after for his large-scale revolutionary and imperial compositions.
