A Rare Pair Of Bronze Candlesticks In The Empire And Return From Egypt Styles—19th Century
A remarkable and rare pair of wall-mounted candlesticks in gilded bronze and bronze with a black patina, depicting two elegant hands, each holding a large fluted cornucopia.
The contrast between the deep black patina of the hands and the warm luster of the gilded bronze gives this pair an exceptional presence. The delicate detailing of the fingers, the generous curve of the horns, and the broad floral wreaths combine to create a dramatic, refined, and particularly decorative ensemble.
Inspired by the neoclassical repertoire, the Empire style, and the “Return from Egypt” aesthetic, these candlesticks are true wall sculptures. They can be placed in an entryway, living room, or library, as well as on either side of a mirror, a painting, or a fireplace.
According to information provided by their previous owners, they date from the late 19th century and were originally designed as candelabra before being converted to electric lighting at a later date. The wiring and the old hole visible on the reverse side bear witness to this conversion.
This rare model bears a resemblance to certain designs later produced by Maison Jansen. However, in the absence of a signature or label, no attribution to this firm is proposed.
The quality of the cast iron and the substantial amount of bronze are confirmed by their exceptional weight: approximately 2.3 kg each, or nearly 4.6 kg for the pair.
The electrical wires were simply cut during removal; both sconces were previously in working order.
Very good overall condition, with an antique patina, some signs of use, and slight wear on the gilding consistent with their age.
A pair of great elegance, now particularly difficult to find on the market.
