"Flemish School Of The 17th Century – Follower Of Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678) “mercury, Argus And Io”"
Framed antique oil on canvas, 160 x 123 cm. An important oil on canvas illustrating the mythological episode of Mercury and Argus, inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses. The subject and composition are directly influenced by the artistic circle of Jacob Jordaens, whose major narrative and stylistic principles this work adopts. The composition is notably inspired by Jacob Jordaens' painting "Mercury and Argus" (oil on canvas, 196 × 235 cm), held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, as well as by the Study of Five Cows (oil on canvas, 66 × 82 cm) held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lille, works reproduced in the catalogue raisonné by R.-A. d'Hulst (Jacob Jordaens, Mercatorfonds, Antwerp, 1982, figs. 74 and 75). The painting illustrates the key moment of the narrative: Io, Jupiter's lover, transformed into a white heifer to protect her from Juno's jealousy, is placed under the guard of the hundred-eyed giant Argus. Mercury, sent to rescue her, disguises himself as a shepherd and uses the charms of music to lull the fierce guardian to sleep. The scene captures the moment before Argus's execution, in a pastoral atmosphere enlivened by the presence of the flock. The vigor of the figures, the monumentality of the bodies, the naturalism of the animals, and the warm palette all testify to the direct influence of Jacob Jordaens and the great Flemish Baroque tradition of the 17th century.
