Very beautiful watercolor by Fernand Herbo (1905-1995), renowned French painter, appointed Official Painter of the Navy in 1944.

Insettled in Honfleur after his Montmartre years, Herbo devoted much of his work to the sea, ports and scenes of maritime life, becoming one of the sensitive representatives of Norman estuary painting.

This composition depicts a bustling harbor with docked boats, treated in a rapid, expressive script. The scene is structured by the perspective of the quay and lined-up boats, while a lone boat enlivens the water.
The loose, almost sketchy brushstrokes, combined with subtle washes of bluish grays and water greens, aptly convey the shifting reflections and maritime atmosphere.

The signature accompanied by the anchor testifies to his status as a Navy painter, lending the work additional authenticity.
